New prices on studentlunches 2026

Starting from 1 January 2026, Kela will increase the state meal subsidy for higher education students. The meal subsidy is financial support provided by the state for each student meal to keep prices lower in student restaurants. At the same time, the maximum price that student restaurants are allowed to charge for a subsidised student meal will also increase.

As a result of these national adjustments, the prices of student lunches and special lunches at Kårkaféerna will change. The new price for a student lunch will be €3.10.

The lunch prices for researchers, staff, and other guests will remain unchanged.

From 1 January 2026, the meal subsidy will amount to €2.80 per student meal. The pricing of student restaurants is regulated by a government decree, which states that the maximum price for a student meal is €5.90. According to an assessment by the industry organisation MaRa, costs in the restaurant sector have increased by 7.3% during the period 1 October 2022–30 September 2025 since the previous adjustment of the maximum price.
